Conservation education comes to Big Lake
By Pat Ivey

About 50 students from schools in northeast Arkansas and southeast Missouri spent the day Monday at the Big Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Mississippi County as part of a conservation education program conducted by Mississippi County Community College.

According to Sharyn Stevenson of MCCC, the Education Talent Search is a federally funded program which targets students in grades 6-12 who will be the first generation in their families to attend college. The year-long program culminates with a summer camp in June. Each summer camp is geared around a different theme. The wildlife workshops are part of this year's three-part program, which also includes etiquette and computer skills, and will lead to a trip to the St. Louis area. Program participants will visit Grant's Farm, the Baseball Hall of Fame, Washington University, the Gateway Arch and Meramec Caverns and attend a Cardinals baseball game at Busch Stadium.

"These kids showed promise, they are bright, so they got into this program," Brian Braudis, Big Lake National Wildlife Refuge manager, said.

For more information on the Education Talent Search program, call Niki Johns at MCCC at 762-1020.
