Conservationists square off on damming the Yellow River
By Louis Cooper, [email protected]

More than 125 people turned out in Milton to learn about a proposal to dam the Yellow River to create a new source of drinking water.

"Right now, we have more questions than we have answers," said Ron Bartel, director of the Northwest Florida Water Management District's Division of Resource Management. "I think that's healthy."

Bartel was among the speakers at Thursday's forum, which was sponsored by the Pensacola Bay System Environmental Education Coordination Team and conducted on Milton's Pensacola Junior College campus.

The Okaloosa Citizens for Water Conservation wants to dam the Yellow River north of U.S. 90 in the north Okaloosa community of Milligan. The river flows from Alabama into Okaloosa and Santa Rosa counties, where it empties into Blackwater Bay.

A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' study of the project's feasibility is expected to be completed next year.
