Eustis Launches `Boat Gathering'
By Sara Sheckler

EUSTIS -- Landlubbers and boating fanatics alike can enjoy an array of classic boats to be displayed during the first Antique and Classic Boat Gathering on Saturday at the Lake Walk.

The free event from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. will showcase nearly 50 boats docked in Lake Eustis or on trailers in the parking lot of The Crazy Gator, said Charles Rudd, program manager of Eustis Main Street, one of the event's sponsors.

"Mount Dora has a very successful boat show every year," Rudd said.

"A number of Eustis residents have said, 'We have a great facility on the water, so why don't we have a boat show?' "

Boats, ranging from 12 to 30 feet long and dating back to the 1910s, are scheduled to arrive from across the state.

"Boaters are bringing their boats from as far away as Key Largo," Rudd said.

Along with boats on display there will be boats for sale, including a wooden canoe made in 1910 and an 18-foot 1967 Chris Craft.

Nan and Jim Reinking, members of the Sunnyland Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society, will display their 20-foot triple cockpit 1930 Chris Craft.

"We've been into antique boats for three years. The event sounds like fun -- seeing other people with their boats," Nan Reinking said.

The Tavares couple purchased another antique boat about a year ago.

"Its lines are beautiful. It's a little sporty, a mahogany boat that is mostly original and looks how it looked when it was new," Reinking said.

Rudd said he hopes the boat show will become a yearly event.

"We felt that with our waterfront identity this event was a natural," Rudd said.

"It fits in with the Eustis Sailing Club Regatta and the power boat races held in Eustis in the spring."

The event is being held in conjunction with the Antiques Anonymous Antique Car Show in nearby Ferran Park, which will feature vehicles dating back to the 1920s, a disc jockey spinning tunes and hot dogs, hamburgers, potato chips and soft drinks for sale.
