ISLAMORADA, Fla. — Two Islamorada anglers weighed in near-world-record dolphin and bonefish recently, including a 51.5-pound bull dolphin on fly tackle and a 15-pound, 11-ounce bonefish.
Nick Stanczyk, a 16-year-old high school student, caught the dolphin on fly tackle with 15-pound-test tippet on March 25. The teen battled the fish for 5 1/2 hours aboard the Catch 22, skippered by his uncle, Scott Stanczyk.
"It's probably the best catch I ever made," said Nick Stanczyk, who won
the Junior Master Angler title at both the 1999 and 2000 Metropolitan South
Florida Fishing Tournaments. "It would be an incredible fish on any tackle,
but on a fly rod it's really special."
Stanczyk's catch, on a pilchard-patterned fly, was taken about 35 miles south of Islamorada. Although the fish broke the old state record by 13 pounds, according to the International Game Fish Association, it was just 2 pounds shy of the 53.5-pound world record dolphin caught on fly tackle off Isla Muejeres, Mexico, in 1990 by Rufus Wakeman of Jensen Beach, Fla.
The big bull dolphin was among a half-dozen 30- to 40-pound fish that had
schooled behind the Catch 22, said Richard Stanczyk, Nick's father and owner
of Bud N' Mary's Fishing Marina in Islamorada.
