Aquarium Showcases Mr. Mom for Father s Day; Underwater Adventures Opens New
Underwater Adventures
BLOOMINGTON, Minn., June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Underwater Adventures opens its newest exhibit tomorrow, Friday June 15, showcasing an amazing collection of seahorses, seadragons and pipefish just in time for Father's Day. (Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20010614/MNTH014 ) Sometimes referred to as the "Mr. Mom of the Sea," the male seahorse does something truly incredible: he carries his young during pregnancy and actually gives birth! Female seahorses deposit fertile eggs into the male, who nurture their young in a womb-like pouch. After four weeks, the male will give birth to 100-700 babies. Once born, the babies are immediately self-sufficient. "The new seahorse exhibit is a wonderful way for visitors to get a better look at these amazing creatures and understand their unique reproductive process," says Craig Atkins, Director of Animal Husbandry at the Aquarium. "We have our own little collection of Mr. Moms." With nearly 100 in all, Underwater Adventures has one of the biggest collections in the country. Pot-bellied and Cape seahorses and their recent young will be on display in the new gallery along with dozens of Moon jellies raised at the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans.
Special Father's Day Events for Sunday June 17, 2001: -- First 500 dads will receive $5.00 OFF admission to the aquarium. -- Performances by the Steel Drum Band, 33* North from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. -- All visitors will receive a coupon good for $5.00 OFF the Ron Schara Fishing School, the aquarium's new summer day camp for kids age 7-12.
