Anglers, boaters should respect the wind
By Matt Williams, [email protected]

Fishermen can modify their lures, strategies and fishing techniques all they want. But one thing they cant change is the weather. Anglers have two choices when dealing with Mother Nature: make due with the hand thats dealt or stay home and wait for another day.

Smart anglers -- fresh and saltwater alike -- have spent much of the last few weeks standing on the shoreline and waiting for more favorable fishing conditions. While there were a few decent fishing days mixed in, the month of May was pretty much a rocking, rolling mess.

Gusty south winds turned many Texas reservoirs into seas of white-capping waves that made boating a dangerous proposition at best. Then came the back-to-back cold snaps ushered in by snappy north winds.

As refreshing as they were, the late spring cold fronts packed some dangerous conditions for boaters. I heard about two incidents where fishing boats were capsized by the raging swells. One of the mishaps made the evening news and the fisherman told about how quickly his peaceful day on the lake almost turned deadly.

Hopefully that angler has developed a new respect for the wind and water. Otherwise, he may not be so lucky next time around.
