65 Acres Added To Crestone-Area Conservation Site

CRESTONE - The Manitou Institute Crestone/Baca Land Trust has completed the purchase of a 65-acre wetland to add to the 50-acre wetland purchased by the group last October as part of the newly forming Cottonwood Creek Conservation Site.

The conservation site, located in the Baca Grande development south of Crestone, likely will be completed in May with the addition of another 70 acres of wetland.

Funds for the acquisition were provided by a $129,000 grant from Great Outdoors Colorado lottery and local supporters who contributed the necessary matching cash.

To protect the land in perpetuity, a conservation easement was granted by the land trust to The Nature Conservancy, which prohibits development of the parcel.

Cottonwood Creek is one of half a dozen creeks that meander out of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains onto the Baca Ranch, which is destined to become part of the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve.
