Forest Service to assess watersheds to protect fish
By the Associated Press

Two conservation groups say the US Forest Service has agreed to assess eleven watersheds in the Salmon-Challis National Forest to determine how irrigiation diversions affect threatened salmon, steelhead and bull trout.

The Western Watersheds Project and Committee for Idaho's High Desert filed suit in June 2001, claiming the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management failed to regulate more than one-thousand water diverions on public land in the upper Salmon River Basin.

They claim fish venture up the diversions and die, rather than spawning.

Jon Marvel of the Western Watersheds Project says the settlement will ensure the diversions are modified and won't harm the fish.

The groups next will ask the BLM to comply with the Endangered Species Act by following suit to the Forest Service's actions.
