Boat ramp request goes to commission
By Chris Curry, [email protected]
CHARLOTTE COUNTY -- A request for additional boat ramps will be on the table as Charlotte County commissioners cull through projects a potential extension of the one-percent sales tax could fund.
Charlotte County Parks and Recreation Director Laura Kleiss Hoeft said she has formally requested that county commissioners set aside up to $7 million for land acquisition in west, south and east Charlotte County to secure sites for future boat ramp construction.
"We need waterfront property that has access to deep enough water to get it permitted for a boat ramp," she said. "With that comes a hefty price tag."
Because potential locations for new boat ramps are premium property, Kleiss Hoeft said private owners were gobbling them up with a voracious appetite. Because of this, she said it was impossible to pinpoint exact locations where future boat ramps might go.
As the county faces the question of public boat ramp access, Kleiss Hoeft said expansion of the well-used Placida boat ramp was not a viable option. With 88 parking spaces for boat trailers, she said Placida was "built-out."
