County pushes water conservation
By Tim Thornton, [email protected]
Voluntary water conservation begins today in Roanoke County.
County government is mailing a list of water-saving tips to its water customers and putting the list on the county Web site. Those tips include taking short showers rather than baths, fixing leaky toilets, and running dishwashers only when they're full.
"We're really talking about doing what we should be doing all the time," board Chairman Butch Church said.
Recent rains have done virtually nothing to replenish Roanoke Valley reservoirs, but County Administrator Elmer Hodge said during Tuesday's board of supervisors meeting that the conservation measures are a precaution, not a sign of calamity.
"The reservoir is in great shape," Hodge said. "It's virtually full."
Spring Hollow reservoir, the county's primary water source, is 72 percent full, which utility director Gary Robertson said is normal for this time of year. At the current consumption rate, that should last the county into February, even with Roanoke using 4 million gallons of Spring Hollow water per day.
