Fishing report: Elliott Bay: good but not early on
By Mark Yuasa
Elliott Bay, the Emerald City's favorite backyard fishery, opens tomorrow, and thousands of anglers are expected to turn out for what should be a fairly good run of chinook salmon.
"We are predicting a good, strong run in Elliott Bay, but we don't expect good catches early on, since the majority of fish aren't staging yet," said Pat Pattillo of state Fish and Wildlife's intergovernmental policy division.
Pattillo said the preseason forecast calls for 21,000 chinook (12,000 of hatchery origin) to migrate upriver.
This year, sport anglers will get a one-week start ahead of the tribal net fishery and may get an additional three-day fishery once the tribes are finished in August.
The inner-bay salmon sport fishery is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, from tomorrow through Aug. 18, although it may close earlier if the run doesn't appear to as strong as predicted.
