Kids Learn Boat Safety's Important in Winter, Too

On Thursday, 34 kids from preschool to sixth grade participated in a water safety class at the Jamestown YMCA. What made it more exciting for the children was being able to operate a boat in the YMCA swimming pool, while snowflakes were falling outside.
"We brought up things that pertain to the season," said Bob Martin, manager of Pipestem Dam, "like being around thin ice and hypothermia."
Martin also runs a water safety program in the summer, and modifies the program he has in the winter to reflect the season and dangers associated with the cold and ice.
"We eliminate things like safety equipment in the boats and substitute information on hypothermia," Martin said.
