Hiking For Land Conservation
Mark Bosma, [email protected]

Ginny McGrath is hiking the Long Trail this Summer.

The attorney for the department of Forests, Parks and Recreation is making the trip to enjoy the outdoors, and to spread the word about the Vermont Land and Facilities Trust Fund. The fund enables her department to privately raise money to help preserve Vermont's state lands.

"And so it's a revenue source that supplements our operating budget that allows us to do things like boundary surveys," McGrath says. "For example, one of my favorite uses for the fund is to provide funds for the conservation camps that fish and wildlife runs. That'll provide them with some much needed funds to fix those facilities up."

McGrath is spreading that word by stopping at shelters along the way and talking to everyone she sees, and leaving messages for those who will follow her.

"I'm talking to hikers and taking advantage of the shelter log system, which every shelter along the long trail has one, and I have some stickers that I put in," she says. "And it talks about the fact that without state land, it's a very short long trail, and about a third of the long trail is on state lands."
