After-school effort teaches fine points of reeling 'em in
By TERRY KLIEWER , Copyright 2001 Houston Chronicle

It's Saturday and a dozen fourth-graders from the Williams Elementary School Fishing Club are discovering two of life's truths:

Fishing is fun when they're biting, and it's usually fun even when they're not.

"I got one ... I think. Yeah! Hey, everybody!" shouts Michael Montalbano as his lightweight rod bends against a 13-inch, half-pound bass.

Bright sunshine plays across Cinco Ranch Lake. A fresh breeze is blowing. This could be a day etched in the lad's memory forever.

His beaming dad, Tony, who has fished with him since Michael was 5, is standing by to help land the club's first catch of the morning. He is soon joined by fishing instructor Kelly Stroud, who measures the fish for classroom discussion next week.
