One of the things that is guaranteed to get my attention every time is a story about brothers who take hunting and fishing trips together. I consider it a trip even if it lasts but a few hours and it takes place right in their own back yard, so to speak.
This week I came across stories about two pairs of brothers. The first pair was hunting in Dutchess County on the opening day of turkey season a week ago Tuesday. One brother lives in Hyde Park and the other doesn't live in the area. You would think that the one who lives locally would bag the first bird since he's hunting on home turf, and he is a ranking officer in Region 3 of the Environmental Conservation Police.
Unfortunately, Captain Peter Fanelli's brother Victor Fanelli not only took the duo's first bird of the season, at last report he had filled his two bird season limit. We can only imagine the pressure that this must put the captain under.
The other story comes from the Hudson River. Two brothers, Frank and Walt Spilbor, were fishing for striped bass last Tuesday. The two were fishing from a small boat when the older of the two hooked up with a large bass. It took some time, but eventually Frank managed to bring the fish to the boat. Several times during the battle, Walt mentioned to Frank that the fish seemed rather large. He was right.
The fish surfaced and rolled right next to the boat a couple of times before they realized that their large boat net was too small to hold the entire fish, so Frank had to rely on his kid brother to haul the fish over the gunwale into the boat.
