Trophy Trout Is Heck of Old Fish Tale
By Brian Bubak, Albany Democrat-Herald
Twelve-year-old Randy Spradlin fought the monster for five or 10 minutes. It was a big fish on the line, he thought to himself, a really big fish.
And sure enough, he soon landed a rainbow trout out of Freeway Lakes that stretched for more than two feet. It was also an ugly fish, a very ugly and unhealthy-looking fish. Its fins were damaged and it had tumor-like lesions growing on its flanks. The fish had lost patches of skin in places. Although it took a lot of effort to land, the fish appeared to be near death by the time it was pulled to the bank.
"It looked like it was a sick fish," Randy's mother Shelly Spradlin said.
Proud of the biggest catch of his young life nonetheless, Randy showed it to several neighbors. One neighbor, Charlie Stokes, contacted the Albany Democrat-Herald with concerns about water quality in the popular fishing spot, where thousands of people go to fish each year, expecting to eat what they catch.
As it turns out the fish was not a cancerous mutant spawned in toxic waters, but rather a retired brood fish from the state's Roaring River Fish Hatchery east of Crabtree.
