Conservation Group Gets $261 Million Gift - Intel co-founder's donation among biggest
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Intel co-founder Gordon Moore has pledged $261 million to a conservation group.
The grant to Conservation International is one of the largest gifts to an environmental group.
The grants, to be paid over 10 years, will help researchers identify and protect biodiversity hot spots. Such areas cover just 1.4 percent of the Earth but are home to more than 60 percent of its terrestrial species.
Conservation International will use the money to set up field stations in several at-risk areas.
Moore said his interest in the environment stems from the changes he noticed while returning to favorite vacation spots in Mexico over the years.
