Conservation Groups Say Wyoming Energy Commission Should be Dumped
By The Associated Press
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) The Wyoming Energy Commission should be disbanded and its mission absorbed by the Wyoming Business Council, representatives from five conservation groups said.
The Wyoming Energy Commission does not have a mission or an agenda that is sufficiently distinct from the Minerals, Energy and Transportation Division, Wyoming Business Council to warrant continuing existence and funding, the representatives wrote in a letter to each of the states 90 lawmakers.
The letter was signed by members of the Wyoming Outdoor Council, Powder River Basin Resource Council, Sierra Club, Greater Yellowstone Coalition and Biodiversity Associates.
The commission is responsible for recommending ways to streamline permitting and other regulations to increase the market for Wyomings minerals. It is also charged with recommending ways to promote cost-effective conservation and renewable energy resources, among other mandates.
In the letter, dated Dec. 19, the groups said they were disappointed that Gov. Jim Geringers appointees are all energy industry officials and that no member of the general public, higher education community or energy industry work force is included. Also, no representative for consumers, conservation or renewable energy resources was appointed, the letter states.
