Boy Scouts Seeking Donations to Complete Boat's Trip to DeLand
By Lynn Bulmahn, [email protected]

ORANGE CITY -- Boy Scout Troop 544 is asking for donations and help to resume their project to preserve a rare Vietnam-era torpedo patrol boat.

The 80-foot boat, designated PTF-7, has been in limbo for the past two weeks after sustaining damage from a towing accident. Promises made to the scouts have not been fulfilled, according to troop leaders. Now, the troop hopes an insurance carrier will help patch things up, said troop committee member Robert McCray, who is spearheading the project.

The accident, which occurred at the beginning of a Jan. 11 excursion to bring the boat to DeLand, forced scout leaders to abort the trip. It also drained the group's bank account, about $10,000, most of which was donated money to help get the boat to DeLand.

McCray said $15,000 is needed to continue the effort. Corporate sponsorships are being sought. "We're still looking for someone to tow it from South Florida," he added.

Assistant Scoutmaster Eric Pisano said the group hasn't given up, but the scouts have been heartbroken that the project hit a snag.
