MetLife(R) Auto & Home Offers Help To Keep You Afloat this Boating Season
WARWICK, R.I., May 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The 2002 North American Safe Boating
Campaign has declared May 18-24 National Safe Boating week. MetLife Auto &
Home is getting on board by offering free boating safety materials, as well
as an important reminder: "It all starts with buckling up!" to ensure that
all boaters -- from the most experienced captains to the youngest mates --
encounter smooth sailing all summer long.
"The number one cause of boating-related deaths is accidental drowning,"
said Captain Scott Evans, Chief of the Office of Boating Safety of the U.S.
Coast Guard. "There is no reason these deaths cannot be prevented - wearing
a life jacket is one sure way to help save your life. You wouldn't think
about not wearing a seat belt in your car, so why would you consider not
wearing a life jacket on your boat or personal watercraft? A lot of
accidents are preventable, if everyone remembers the Coast Guard's slogan to
'boat smart from the start!'"
MetLife Auto & Home offers a free comprehensive boating safety guide that
consolidates 15 US Coast Guard brochures. The guide is packed with
information, including colorful navigation charts, information on hurricane
observations and precautions, emergency marine radio frequencies, tips for
safe trailering, water-skiing safety advice, and other vital information for
staying safe on the water. For children, or kids of all ages, MetLife Auto
& Home's free Boating Safety Coloring & Activity Book features the beloved
PEANUTS(TM) gang in a nautical collection of brain-teasers, puzzles, word-
searches, and mazes all focused on the subject of boating safety. The guide
and activity book can be ordered by calling 1-800-MET-LIFE (1-800-638-5433).
"Understanding the basics of safety is the first step to enjoying the
pleasure and sport of boating. MetLife Auto & Home is making boating safety
material available now - at the start of boating season - to help boaters
enjoy their crafts to the fullest and have fun safely," said Cathy Rein,
President and CEO of MetLife Auto & Home. "But first, remember to buckle up
your jacket ... life jacket, that is."
