5-story towboat - nation's largest - comes to Q-C
By Ann McGlynn
Capt. Tim Milum is the quiet man in charge of a mighty large boat.
The Motor Vessel Mississippi came to Davenport on Monday as it makes its way to the Twin Cities for the start of a tour back down the river with the Mississippi River Commission. The five-story, 2,600-ton towboat is the largest in the United States.
The seven-person commission, chosen by the president and confirmed by the Senate, will hold public hearings on the vessel at several stops along the way to Louisiana, including one in Davenport at Oneida Landing a week from today.
"They want to hear what the public has to say about the river," said Justine Barati, spokeswoman for the Rock Island District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which owns the MV Mississippi.
Barati expects a large crowd for the hearing. "People are very interested in river issues here," she said.
The towboat is 241 feet long, 58 feet wide and 52 feet tall and has horsepower of 6,300. It holds 80,235 gallons of fuel, consuming 6,270 gallons a day with 16 barges in tow.
