Levee district OKs boat landing plan
By Michael Danna

PORT ALLEN -- The Atchafalaya Basin Levee District board agreed Wednesday to what it called the general terms of an agreement allowing St. Martin Parish to manage the upgraded Belle River boat landing.

Board attorney William Dupont and St. Martin Parish President Scott Angelle have been in negotiations over the contract for nearly three months.

Under the proposed plan, St. Martin would manage security and parking at the popular boat landing used by fishermen and recreational boaters, as well as provide other services such as litter control and lighting.

Dupont said there are a few aspects of the tentative proposal that have not been completed, such as how much St. Martin will pay the security guard who will live at the facility, "but that could be being worked out as we speak."

Under the terms of the contract discussed Wednesday, St. Martin Parish would be responsible for paying wages of the round-the-clock security guard, but no salary has yet been set, Dupont said.

The commissioners agreed that once the contract is in place, it would run for a period of one year. Dupont said at that time it could be further refined if necessary.
