Water systems focus on conservation
Grant Sinclair

As Georgia's population continues to grow, water is becoming an increasingly scarce resource, prompting the Dept. of Natural Resources to put forward an action plan for water conservation.

The conservation plan is designed to coordinate state conservation efforts, implement conservation measures at DNR facilities, work with local governments to require conservation planning and to educate citizens on the importance of water conservation.

Heading up the water conservation efforts is state Water Conservation Coordinator Mary Elfner. Elfner is based out of Savannah, but has no staff or funding to implement changes.

The first place Elfner wants to begin on the plan is the DNR itself. Elfner plans to begin working on water audits on state parks and historical sites throughout the state, and making recommendations on conservation measures, including low-flow fixtures and toilets.

"The first place we need to start is with ourselves," Elfner said. "We at DNR need to look at ways we can conserve water. Water conservation begins by taking personal responsibility for water use."
