DNR to train more conservation officers
George McLaren ,[email protected]

The depleted ranks of state conservation officers will get a boost next year as the hiring process finally gets under way to replace vacancies left by retirements.

Conservation officers patrol recreation properties and enforce hunting and fishing regulations for the state Department of Natural Resources.

But they also track down poachers, save flood victims and help bust up illegal meth labs on state property, among other law enforcement duties.

The most recent officer class graduated in 1998, said Stephen Sellers, DNR spokesman. Since then, retirements and other attrition have cut the number to 197 from 215.

Dick Mercier, president of the Indiana Sportsmen's Roundtable, said even the full complement of 215 won't be enough, though it'd be better than in years past.
