DNR ready to reel in free fishing weekend
By Lesa Ingraham
CADILLAC -- Kids of all ages are invited to lakes, streams and other waterways on June 8 and 9 as part of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Free Fishing Weekend.
"We wanted a way to get more young people into fishing," said Tom Rozich, fisheries biologists for the DNR. "Most of the time, the only chance that young people get to go fishing is when their parents take them. We want to at least have a weekend for them to go out and learn something about the sport."
For the weekend, the DNR waives the need to obtain a fishing license, Rozich said. In Cadillac, people are invited to the "Big Ol' Bullhead Fishing Derby, Carpe the Carp/Seize the Sucker" Festival on June 8.
There will be a fishing contest for bullheads and sucker in Lakes Cadillac and Mitchell, as well as the canal. Fish brought to the Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Museum on M-115 in Cadillac can be weighed and a person will be there to certify master anglers.
The festival is the result of discussions between business owners and the DNR on the high number of bullheads and suckers in the Cadillac lakes. If theres too many in the lakes, then let's catch them and have a fun contest at the same time," said Carol Potter, executive director of the Cadillac Area Visitors Bureau.
The festival is a combination of efforts from the visitors bureau, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and area businesses. Lake City will celebrate its Fish Fest from June 7 to 9, with the fishing contest beginning with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. on June 8.
