State offers public last chance to speak on its conservation, recreation plan
By Richard Smith, [email protected]

AUSTIN -- The public had a final chance Wednesday to speak out on a 10-year plan to guide conservation of the state's natural resources.

A public meeting on the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's conservation and recreation plan was held before a group of about 100 at the agency's Austin headquarters.

The plan was directed by the Texas Legislature. It recommends adding state park acreage that is close to certain metropolitan areas. But no financial means for such expansion of park land is in the document.

"The 10-year plan will be in constant evolution. It will be a living document," said Robert Cook, Parks and Wildlife's executive director.

Individuals and groups ranging from cattle associations to environmental organizations were on hand to speak.
