Conservation foundation honors 3 - DEVOTION: Walter Parker, Mark Hickok, Jay Hammond named.
By Katie Pesznecker

The Alaska Conservation Foundation today will honor three Alaskans who they say have devoted their lives to protecting Alaska and preserving the state's unique wilderness.

Former Gov. Jay Hammond and environmental activists Mark Hickok and Walter Parker will receive the Alaska Conservationist Lifetime Achievement Award, which was created last year.

Celia Hunter and Ginny Wood were the first to receive the awards. The women, both writers, helped build the wilderness lodge Camp Denali in the Kantishna area in 1951.

The foundation's board selected this year's recipients, said Deborah Williams, the director. The three were chosen because they've demonstrated a long-term commitment to conserving what's special about Alaska, she said.

"Alaska has the most extraordinary environment certainly in the United States and arguably the world," Williams said. "We have people who have dedicated significant parts of their lives to protecting this. We really thought that since these people have made such a dramatic contribution to Alaska, they deserved a special award."
