Stringent water conservation measures ahead for Charlotte area
By The Associated Press

Officials in the Charlotte area are scrambling to find emergency sources of water to avoid drastic measures that could close industries and lead to layoffs.

In Statesville, the city plans to order businesses that use 5,000 gallons or more a day to start cutting back. If they don't, in two weeks the city might have only enough water for residents to drink and bathe. Businesses would get none, city officials said.

The move could lead to layoffs and decreased production. The city expects to set specific water cutbacks for businesses at an early emergency meeting scheduled for Friday.

Statesville has restricted lawn watering, sidewalk washing and other activities since July 12.

"I'll repeat it again," Statesville Mayor John Marshall said, "the state keeps telling us the worst is yet to come."

In a late night meeting Thursday, Shelby won temporary relief for its water woes from neighboring Kings Mountain.
