Beaufort Marine Institute gets donated boat for lessons
By CHRIS BENDER, Gazette staff writer
Young men at the Beaufort Marine Institute got the chance for a hands-on lesson in seamanship when they spent a few days aboard a donated boat.
Six BMI students spent seven hours on a boat that was donated to the Associated Marine Institutes. The boat, a 65-foot sail boat, called the Wind Dragon, will be sold and the proceeds will go to AMI.
Though they didn't have much wind, Ogden Lazenby, science teacher and former seamanship instructor said the group enjoyed it.
"For some of the kids, it was their first time on a boat," he said.
The trip started from the Port Royal boat landing and took the students down the Beaufort River toward Parris Island. On the way back, Lazenby said they took a side trip out into Battery Creek.
