Wanted: Boats for festival parade
By JOAN HELLYER Courier Times
Borough officials are looking for people interested in parading their decorated boats on the Delaware Canal June 23 for the annual Yardley Canal Festival.
A local father-daughter group is going all out to make its entry into the Yardley Canal Festival's boat parade something special.
"It's to celebrate the Indian Princess motto, which is 'Dads and daughters, friends always,' " said Tri-Hampton YMCA Indian Princess group member Greg Frank.
"We like to do outdoor things with the girls," he said, so the parade is right up their alley.
Festival organizers hope more people will sign up. Ten boats have been entered so far in the June 23 celebration of the Delaware Canal. Last year, 30 boats were in the parade, said festival official Susan Taylor, executive director of the Friends of the Delaware Canal, a sponsor of the second annual event.
"We're hoping for an equal number [as last year]," Taylor said.
Kayaks, rowboats, pontoon boats, canoes, or any other non-motorized vessel that can fit in the canal can participate. "It can be anything that your imagination can conjure," Taylor said.
The Indian Princess float consists of two canoes carrying a slab of plywood that will serve as a deck, said Frank. "It's going to be like a pontoon."
One of the group's tribal teepees will be on the deck, along with a totem pole the girls made out of cardboard boxes and plastic jars, Frank said. The girls, ages 5 to 10, also have made flowers out of tissue paper and paper plates to decorate the float. Frank said they'll put the finishing touches on their entry the night before the festival.
Taylor said the parade is not limited to Yardley residents. "It's open to anyone," she said. "One of the winners last year was from Medford."
Prizes will be awarded to boats judged the most beautiful, most humorous, most imaginative and most "typical of Yardley." There also will be "judge's choice" and "best of parade" awards.
The entry fee is $5. Proceeds will help pay for festival costs, said Taylor.
The parade begins at 11 a.m. near the Mary Yardley Footbridge near Fuld Avenue. It will continue 3/4 of a mile down to Lock 5, close to the borough's southern edge.
For information on how to enter the boat parade, call 215-862-2021 or the Yardley Business Association at 215-493-4170.
The parade is one of many events during the canal celebration, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. along the waterway in Yardley. Admission is free.
