Boating season is here; follow these safety tips
BY MARSHALL BRODIE , Special to The Herald
May is the official start of the boating season across the country. In South Florida, the southeasterly breezes typical of summer are gently ushering in the season.
May also includes National Boating Safety Week, which means it's the perfect time to pull out your boating safety equipment to see what needs to be replaced or updated. When was the last time you really inspected? your life jackets?
It is easy to become complacent.
According to Leslie Woodard, boating safety specialist for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, boating deaths are declining. For the first time in a decade, Florida is not leading the nation in boating deaths. But tragedies on the water still happen all too often, and many are preventable through reasonable caution and proper equipment.
Arguably, the single most important piece of safety equipment is you, the boating operator. When it comes to having a safe trip, there is no substitute for your knowledge and good judgment. That's why you owe it to yourself, your family and friends to take a U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary boating safety course or a U.S. Power Squadron class if you have not already done so.
