Turtle patrol finds rare Leatherback nest on Long Boat Key
The Miami Herald
SARASOTA, Fla. -- (AP) -- A morning beach patrol from the Mote Marine Laboratory found a female Leatherback turtle nesting on Long Boat Key, an event that hasn't been seen in about 30 years.
Laboratory workers estimate the turtle was about 500 pounds. She was tagged for future monitoring before she lugged herself back into the water.
The Thursday find was documented for historical purposes. It was the first documented Leatherback nest on the west central Florida coast since the 1970s, laboratory officials said.
Leatherback turtles typically nest along Florida's Panhandle or east coast beaches from April to July. The turtles also usually nest at night, not during the day.
Mote workers marked the nest and posted a sign warning that it is a federal offense to tamper with the nest of any marine turtle.
