Plum Creek Timber to sell publicly stocked trophy fishing lake
Associated Press

KALISPELL (AP) -- A trophy fishing lake that the state has stocked with trout for years is entirely surrounded by Plum Creek Timber Co. land and may be sold as private property, the company says.

The 160-acre tract, including the 18-acre Metcalf Lake, is one of the most valuable among several Plum Creek parcels being offered for sale in the Swan Valley.

Officials with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks in Kalispell had believed that a northern portion of the lake bordered state land that would allow public access to the lake if necessary.

"We had a survey done that indicated the northernmost 16-20 feet of the lake was on (state) property, which would have allowed continued but difficult access," said Jim Vashro, state fisheries manager in Kalispell.

But Plum Creek recently commissioned another survey that showed the high-water mark of the lake is about nine feet south of the state land line.
