Proposed Ordinance Riles Those With More Than Two Boats To Dock
By David Sommer

Every town should have problems like the folks in Belleair Beach.

The hot issue these days is a new ordinance that would limit the number of boats people are allowed to tie up at their private docks.

Part of Belleair Beach fronts on the Gulf of Mexico, but most homes are on the other side of the thin island that makes up most of the Pinellas beaches. And many of those homes are on canals that lead to Clearwater Harbor.

The problem, as the city council sees it, is the safety issue created by a handful of homeowners with more boats than dock space. One homeowner has a sailboat and two sport fishing boats, all in the 40-plus foot range, in addition to a jet boat and some personal watercraft.

In order to fit all those boats on one dock, the homeowner has been "rafting" one of the fishing boats onto the side of the sailboat, which is tied up to the dock, council members say.
