Inlet Board: Boats may be removed without grant's aid
By Linda Walton
OAK HILL -- An easier way for the city to get rid of abandoned boats cluttering the Indian River Lagoon may have been found by the Ponce de Leon Inlet and Port District Advisory Board.
It could cut the time frame of months to five days for Oak Hill officials who want the boats out of the waterways and might mean the city can proceed with a state grant request to get the job done.
City officials had indicated earlier this week that they couldn't meet the Feb. 15 deadline for a planned boat removal grant request because of the time it would take to have Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission come in to identify the boats and search for the owners.
The simpler method would involve using the state's abandoned property laws.
"I don't know if the source of our planned present grant request would accept this method. I'm checking on it to see if they will," City Commissioner Ron Mercer said Wednesday.
