Safe Boats wins military contract
By Amy Trask, [email protected]
Safe Boats International of Port Orchard and a Raytheon Electronics unit in Poulsbo will share in a $30 million defense contract to build boats to transport U.S. Marine Corps Special Forces in shallow waters.
The contract is small by Raytheon standards but is big news for its subcontractor Safe Boats, which will add 25 jobs, mostly in manufacturing, according to vice president Scott Peterson.
The first three test boats will be shipped in December to Camp Lejeune, N.C. Once the test boats are evaluated, the contract will cover 25 to 30 additional boats.
The 36-foot-long boats can transport up to 20 people -- two Special Forces units and a crew -- at speeds over 40 knots. Equipped with a water-jet-propulsion system, made by HamiltonJet of Seattle, they can maneuver in the shallow waters of rivers and shorelines.
From its Poulsbo office, Raytheon Naval & Maritime Integrated Systems will manage the project's logistics, including initial training on how to operate the boat, manuals and maintenance.
