Coast Guard unit in port Angeles to get new boats
PORT ANGELES -- The U.S. Coast Guard station here is getting five new boats and funding for search and rescue missions, U.S. Sen. Patty Murray announced Tuesday.
"These vessels will significantly improve the search and rescue capability of the Coast Guard throughout the Strait of Juan de Fuca," said Murray, D-Wash.
Two of the boats are 87-footers valued at $4.5 million apiece. The other three are smaller response boats costing $200,000 each, Murray's office said.
Last July, the Coast Guard proposed closing its Quillayute River station in La Push and moving some of its resources to Port Angeles and Port Townsend. That plan was scrapped in early September following a spate of drownings near La Push.
